Dubai Police Urge Drivers to Avoid Tailgating: Dh400 Fine for Violators

Tailgating remains a significant concern for drivers in Dubai, contributing to increased risks of collisions and multi-vehicle accidents.

Despite ongoing warnings, many motorists continue to follow too closely, leaving insufficient space to react if the vehicle ahead slows down or stops unexpectedly.

To combat this dangerous behavior, Dubai Police are emphasizing the necessity of maintaining a safe distance between vehicles and utilizing advanced AI-powered radars to detect violators and impose fines.

Understanding Tailgating

Tailgating is defined as following another vehicle too closely, which can lead to serious accidents. This aggressive driving can cause unnecessary stress for the driver in front, increasing the chances of sudden maneuvers like abrupt braking or lane changes.

Such actions can trigger chain-reaction collisions, particularly on high-speed roads where reaction times are critical. Additionally, tailgating heightens tension among drivers, leading to distractions and risky behavior.

The Cost of Tailgating

Dubai Police have made it clear that failing to maintain a safe following distance can result in a hefty fine of Dh400. They stress that keeping a greater distance not only enhances safety but also reduces the likelihood of accidents.

“Maintaining a safe following distance is essential for your safety on the road,” said Dubai Police via their official social media account.

How to Maintain a Safe Following Distance

To prevent tailgating and ensure road safety, motorists should adhere to the “two-second rule”:

  1. Select a Reference Point: Identify a fixed point ahead, such as a sign or tree.
  2. Count Seconds: Once the vehicle in front passes that point, start counting.
  3. Adjust Distance: If you reach the same point in less than two seconds, you are following too closely and should increase your distance.

In adverse weather conditions, such as rain or fog, or when driving at higher speeds, it is advisable to increase this gap to three to four seconds.

Advanced Monitoring

Dubai Police employ advanced AI-powered radar systems to monitor and penalize traffic violations, including tailgating. These radars are strategically positioned across major roads and highways to ensure strict enforcement of road safety regulations.

The AI continuously analyzes driving patterns, detecting reckless behavior and issuing fines as necessary.

By following these guidelines and maintaining a safe distance, drivers can significantly reduce the risk of accidents, contributing to a safer driving environment for everyone on Dubai’s roads.

How much could the fine be for Jaywalking in the UAE?

How much could the fine be for Jaywalking in the UAE?

With the UAE’s new traffic law in effect, pedestrians need to be more vigilant than ever. The Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024, introduced on March 29, aims to significantly curb jaywalking incidents and enhance road safety.

For more updates, connect with us on WhatsApp!

In January 2024 alone, nearly 44,000 jaywalking violations were recorded in Dubai, raising serious concerns about pedestrian safety.

Tragically, eight individuals lost their lives in related accidents. While crossing outside designated areas may seem quicker, the risks are substantial.

Stricter Penalties

Under the new regulations, the penalties for jaywalking have become considerably harsher. Previously, pedestrians caught crossing from non-designated areas faced a fine of Dh400.

Now, if jaywalking results in an accident, offenders could be fined between Dh5,000 and Dh10,000, and possibly face imprisonment.

For those crossing streets with speed limits of 80 km/h or higher, the consequences are even more severe. Violators may face a minimum three-month jail sentence along with a fine of at least Dh10,000.

Safety Measures for Pedestrians

To avoid the hefty fines and ensure their safety, pedestrians are encouraged to use available infrastructure such as subways, footbridges, and smart crossings.

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has provided several safety tips:

  • Stay alert at zebra crossings; avoid distractions like phone calls or texts.
  • Do not wear headphones while crossing.
  • Always look and listen in all directions before stepping onto the road.
  • Follow traffic signals and only cross when the pedestrian light is green.
  • Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you before crossing.

With these new laws and safety measures in place, the UAE is taking significant steps to reduce pedestrian fatalities and promote responsible road use. Remember, safety first!
